A spelling adventure for UAE Cycle 2 explorers

Why Jungle Safari Spelling?

Jungle Safari Spelling Quest turns spelling practice into an expedition. Across eight safari regions, learners listen, understand, build, check, review and gradually master the words that matter for Grades 5–8.

It is more than a word game: it blends explicit spelling practice, vocabulary meaning, sentence context, personalised review and long-term mastery inside a motivating journey.

Overview

What the game is

A browser-based spelling and vocabulary game designed for UAE MOE Cycle 2 students in Grades 5–8. Learners travel through progressively harder safari regions, meeting the spelling patterns that matter at each stage.

As explorers move from the first camp to the final court, the words they meet are chosen to build real orthographic knowledge — not just to test memory. Along the way the game is designed to support practice with areas such as:

Short vowels Consonant blends Vowel teams Syllables Silent letters Word roots Prefixes Suffixes Multi-syllable academic vocabulary Spelling-pattern recognition

Every word carries spoken audio (recorded when available, or clear browser speech as a fallback), an Arabic meaning clue, an English sentence, hints, syllable support and a short teaching note. Feedback is immediate. The design is meant to support and to help learners practise spelling — it does not promise guaranteed results.

Learning support built in

  • Spoken-word audio with a speech fallback
  • Arabic meaning clues and English sentence context
  • Building words from interactive letter tiles
  • Hints, syllable support and immediate feedback
  • Short teaching explanations and spaced review

How It Works

Listen → Understand → Build → Check → Review → Master

Every word travels the same learning cycle. It is a loop, not a one-off quiz.

Listen

The learner hears the English word using recorded audio when available, or browser speech as a fallback.

Understand

Arabic meaning support and an English sentence connect the spelling with its meaning.

Build

The learner constructs the word from letter tiles, rather than simply reading the answer.

Check

Immediate, supportive feedback marks success or gently encourages another attempt.

Review

Hints, teaching notes, common-error awareness and Campfire Review bring difficult words back.

Master

Spaced review schedules words across days, so progress rests on repeated successful recall.

Game Features

Four ways to learn a word

Each mode trains a different skill: producing a spelling, recognising a correct form, and choosing the right word in context.

Tile Trail

  • Listen to the target word
  • Use the Arabic meaning and sentence clue
  • Build the spelling from letter tiles
  • Call on hints, then read a spelling explanation
  • Progress through graded word banks and earn treasure-map pieces
Active spelling production and recall
Speed Sprint mode emblem

Timed recognition

Speed Sprint

  • 30, 60 or 90-second rounds
  • A correct spelling paired with a carefully generated near-miss
  • Spelling-pattern-aware distractors keep choices sharp

Vocabulary in context

Sentence Quest

  • Choose the word that correctly completes a sentence
  • Four answer choices when possible
  • Practice, Timed and Challenge styles
  • Meaning hints in the Practice style; 5, 10 or 15 questions
  • Feedback explains why the word fits
Meaning, context and vocabulary use
Campfire Review mode emblem

Personalised review

Campfire Review

  • Previously difficult words
  • Missed Sprint and Sentence Quest words
  • Weak spelling patterns the game has noticed
  • Words currently due for spaced review
  • Short, focused practice sessions
Targeted retrieval and correction of weak areas

Sentence Quest is a meaning and context task, not a spelling-production task — the game keeps producing, recognising and understanding words as separate, complementary skills.

Motivation

Learning that feels like an expedition

Rewards are tied to continued practice and mastery — never to punishment. They exist to make repetition, review and persistence more engaging.

Ranks & XPSeven explorer ranks, from Trail Cub to Master Explorer.
Gold coinsSpent in the Trading Post on tile skins, board themes and frames.
Treasure map & relicsMap pieces per trail and a relic album, one slot per word.
Daily questsThree fresh quests a day, with supportive streaks.
Campfire streaksA forgiving freeze token quietly rescues a missed day.
Guardian encountersA region boss wakes once its trail is cleared.
Seasonal trailsRamadan Lantern Trail, Falcon Trail and Winter Oasis events.
Explorer identityPreset UAE-themed nicknames and avatars — never a typed real name.

Companions you earn along the way

Tiko the Toucan companionTiko the ToucanSquawks when you spell it clean
Ziba the Monkey companionZiba the MonkeySteals your hints, gives them back
Rami the Tiger Cub companionRami the Tiger CubPurrs at a five-word combo
Noor the Elephant companionNoor the ElephantNever forgets a spelling

Companions are earned, not bought — one for each trail cleared. Gamification supports the learning; it never replaces it.

Mastery

From one correct answer to real mastery

The mastery engine uses evidence-informed principles: retrieval practice, spaced review, immediate feedback and repeated successful recall. One lucky answer is not mastery.

Every word lives in one of five review boxes. Spell it cleanly and it moves up a box, disappearing for longer. Make an error and it drops back to the start and returns sooner. The intervals grow at each step:

Clean answers move a word forwardA first-try success promotes the word to the next box and a longer gap.
An error returns it to the startMissed words come back sooner, so review targets exactly what is shaky.
Practice is spread over timeWords reappear only when they are due — spaced review, not cramming.
True mastery takes three daysA word counts as mastered only once it reaches Box 5 and has been spelled correctly on three separate days.

The game also tracks spelling patterns, not only individual words. When a pattern trips a learner up often enough to be real rather than noise, the game can build a focused trail out of exactly those words.

A stone Temple Guardian idol that challenges the learner at the end of a trail

Guardian Challenges

The Temple Guardian awakens

Clear a trail and its stone Guardian stirs. The challenge draws from the hardest words in that trail: the learner rebuilds each word from scrambled runes before a torch burns out. Miss a spelling — or let the torch die — and it costs a heart

The Guardian stirsCalm phase — a steady torch and few decoy runes.
EnragedAt two-thirds health the torch burns faster and runes multiply.
Final standAt one-third health the challenge is at its most demanding.

It is a motivating performance challenge built on cumulative review. Crucially, mistakes never remove progress the learner has already earned — losing simply means returning to try again.

For Teachers

A guide for the classroom

Jungle Safari Spelling Quest fits independent practice, whole-class starters and your own weekly spelling lists — all offline, all on the device in front of you.

Independent practice

Students complete a chosen trail individually using headphones.

Starter or retrieval

Open a lesson with a short Sprint or a Campfire Review.

Projector Mode

Display large, whole-class spelling challenges at the front of the room.

Class Battle

Two teams, one screen and live scoring for collaborative practice.

Teacher Studio: your own lists

Turn a custom spelling list into a playable trail. Type one word per line using this format — only the word is required, the rest are optional:

word | Arabic meaning | hint | spelling pattern

Share a list by exporting it as a file, or copy a share link that carries the list itself. Open the link and the list installs locally — no server, no account. The link contains your word list, not any student information.

A suggested lesson workflow

  1. Introduce the spelling pattern.
  2. Demonstrate two or three examples.
  3. Let students complete Tile Trail practice.
  4. Use Sentence Quest to check meaning in context.
  5. Use Sprint for quick recognition.
  6. Review the teacher report.
  7. Assign weak words to Campfire Review.

What the local teacher report shows

  • Levels completed and words attempted
  • First-try accuracy and overall accuracy
  • Words needing review and average attempts
  • Hint use and word-by-word evidence
  • Error information and spelling-pattern accuracy
  • Recommended review focus
  • Sprint and Sentence Quest performance
  • Printable, or copyable in one tap

The report is generated locally on the device. It is not a cloud dashboard and does not allow remote monitoring.

For Parents

A guide for home

Short, regular sessions do more than long ones. Here is a gentle way to help — no homework pressure required.

  • Keep sessions manageable. About 10–15 minutes at a time works well.
  • Let the learner attempt first. Encourage listening and splitting syllables before offering the spelling.
  • Praise strategy. Notice careful listening, fixing an error and finishing a hard trail — not just perfect scores.
  • Use the review system. Practise the words marked as due or needing review.
  • Connect spelling and meaning. Ask for the Arabic meaning, or a new sentence using the word.
  • Review progress together. Open the local report and choose one small, realistic next target.
  • Protect privacy. Use one of the preset explorer nicknames rather than a real name.

A suggested week

Only a suggestion — every family can adapt it.

Day 1Tile Trail
Day 2Campfire Review
Day 3Sentence Quest
Day 4Short Sprint
Day 5Due words or a Guardian

The rhythm matters more than the exact order: a little each day lets the spaced-review system do its quiet work.

Educational Impact

How the design can help

Grounded in how spelling and vocabulary are learned — described honestly, without inflated claims.

Phonological & orthographic attention

Listening and letter construction draw attention to sound sequences and written patterns.

Retrieval practice

Building a word from memory demands more active recall than simply rereading it.

Immediate corrective feedback

Learners discover mistakes while the spelling attempt is still fresh.

Spelling-pattern awareness

Patterns, hints, teaching notes and error detection help students notice transferable rules.

Vocabulary development

Arabic meanings and English sentence context connect word form with meaning.

Contextual understanding

Sentence Quest checks whether students can select vocabulary appropriately in a sentence.

Spaced practice

Due-word scheduling distributes review over several days instead of cramming.

Metacognition

Progress summaries and review recommendations help learners see what they know and what still needs work.

Motivation & persistence

Regions, ranks, companions, collections and guardians make repeated practice feel purposeful.

The game is most effective as part of a balanced learning programme that also includes reading, writing, explicit teaching and meaningful language use. It supports and provides opportunities for practice — it does not replace classroom instruction or guarantee results.

Privacy by Design

Private, local and offline-friendly

No account. No cloud progress.
No real student names required.
  • The core experience can run offline once the files are available.
  • It is an installable PWA where supported.
  • Browser speech may be used as a fallback when recorded audio is unavailable; quality can vary by device.
  • No student login and no cloud account are required.
  • Students choose preset explorer nicknames — the game never asks them to type a real name.
  • Progress is saved in the browser on the current device, and reports are generated locally.
  • No student progress is uploaded by the game.
  • Custom word lists stay local unless a teacher deliberately exports or shares the list itself; a shared link carries list content, not student results.
  • Resetting browser storage may remove local progress, and progress does not automatically synchronise between devices.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who is the game designed for?
UAE MOE Cycle 2 learners in Grades 5–8. The content is graded so it begins with foundation spelling and builds towards more complex academic vocabulary.
Does a student need an account?
No. There is no login and no cloud account. A learner simply picks a preset explorer nickname and an avatar and begins.
Does the game save real names?
No. Students choose from preset UAE-themed nicknames such as Falcon, Desert Raider or Pearl Diver. The game never asks a child to type their real name.
Can it be used at home?
Yes. Short 10–15 minute sessions work well. A suggested weekly routine is included above, and families are free to adapt it.
Can teachers add their own spelling lists?
Yes. Teacher Studio turns a custom list into a playable trail using the format word | Arabic meaning | hint | spelling pattern. Only the word is required.
Does it work on tablets and phones?
Yes. It runs in the browser and is designed to be usable on tablets and phones as well as laptops.
Can it work offline?
Yes. Once the required files are available, the core experience can run offline, and it can be installed as a PWA where supported.
What happens when a learner struggles with a word?
Hints, syllable support and teaching notes are on hand. Missed words drop back in the spaced-review system and return sooner, and Campfire Review gathers them for focused practice.
Is Sentence Quest testing spelling?
No. Sentence Quest checks meaning and context — the learner chooses the word that correctly completes a sentence. Spelling production is trained in Tile Trail, and spelling recognition in Speed Sprint.
Where is progress saved?
In the browser, on the current device. Reports are generated locally and nothing is uploaded by the game.
Can progress move automatically to another device?
No. Progress does not automatically synchronise between devices, and resetting browser storage may remove it.
How can a teacher print the report?
The local report can be printed directly from the browser, or copied in one tap for pasting elsewhere.
